Ball python care

6th March 2009 by Ball Pythons No Comments

Selecting a ball python:
Select a ball python which has clear eyes, skin and which reacts when handled by strangers and puts out its tongue often. It should be sensitive to the surroundings.

Shelter:
Select a protective shelter from which it can’t escape. A glass tank of 20 to 30 gallon is preferable as the ball pythons are good at escaping.

Selecting substrate:
Use paper as the base as it can be easily removed and replaced when necessary. Pine and aspen shaving should be avoided because it settles in mouth when eating. Monitoring the shavings closely and cleaning will keep it free from bacteria.

Hiding place:
A hiding place should be provided so that the snake can hide its entire body inside it. This is made by the help of box made up of card board or plastic. They prefer dark and closed surrounding. So a cave apt for its size can be purchased. As it enjoys hanging on a tree, place one or two branches for it.

Temperature:
The temperature of the shedding should be maintained as 27 to 29Cduring day and not less than 23 to 24C at night for the ball python to stay healthy. This can be done by using heating pads.

Lighting:
As it is a nocturnal animal it doesn’t need any special lighting. Use full spectrum light or any low power light and make sure the ball python doesn’t come in contact with the light as there is a chance of it getting burnt.
