Ball pythons have a picky food habit and it is bit difficult to make them eat frozen food because it would’ve been given live mice and rats when kept in pet stores. It can stay without taking food for a year not for a reason that it is not really hungry but there can be reasons like improper shelter, very high or low temperature, humidity etc.. They won’t eat unless they are comfortable.

Sometimes there is a loss of weight when they stay without eating for more than six months, at this time force feeding is done with the advice of a veterinarian.

The prey is identified by the snake by its scent color, temperature and movement. If the snake feels comfortable it kills the prey and starts swallowing. After eating it requires a warm and dark location to lie down and digest the food. Young ones eat once in seven days to ten days. They eat whole animals and do not need any supplementary vitamins or nutrition. Adults eat once in three weeks.

If a rodent is kept live in a cage unattended it is not quite safe for the snake as if it scares the snake may be attacked by the rodent.
