Ball Python (Python regius), is a native snake of Africa, found in the western parts of the continent. They are called as BALL PYTHONS due to the fact that they tend to coil up into a ball with their head in the center when the snake is afraid. They coil up around their prey and squash, and then feed on them (Constrictors). These snakes can be easily tamed and hence they are used as pets. In fact experts advise beginners to pet Ball snakes since they are one of the most docile snakes available.

Ball Pythons need to be given a proper environment to thrive. Ball snakes are well known for their ‘escapes’, so they have to be kept in secure cages similar to a fish tank, and also the snake has to be given a warm temperature for its survival. So a heat source has to be arranged (such as heat mat) and again, the tank has to be closed properly with a safety lid to prevent the snake from escaping. Hygrometer, thermometer, timer lamp are also useful.

The habitat of the Ball Python must be given a good deal of care while having it as pet. It should be provided with adequate heat and light, yet should not be easy for the snake to come out easily. All pet stores have containers to hold snake. But using an old shoe box or similar boxes that has good heat source and proper lighting with lid is also advisable. A proper heating system should be set up in the tank to maintain the temperature around 90oF. Either a heat mat or an Aluminum reflector clip type lamp can be used. The snake is nocturnal, so UV lamps are not necessary. Using a hygrometer the humidity of the enclosure should be checked. The humidity of the cage should be maintained around 60%. Low humidity leads to drying of skin, dehydration and improper shedding of skin. Ball Pythons should be stripped off from its skin when there is improper shedding. The eye cap that is not completely shed should be removed by using scotch tape. Care should be taken such that the scotch tape is not used on the eye of the snake as such
